A drug that every year saves more than 100 million lives
Heparin, considered an essential drug by the World Health Organization, was discovered in 1916 by Jay McLean, a young student of medicine at John Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Today, it is the most commonly used anti-coagulant in thrombosis prevention and treatment. According to data from the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, one out of every four people in the world die due to causes related to this illness.
The potential of the heparin molecule and its derivatives to develop new drugs is enormous. Currently, new applications related to antitumor, anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity are being studied.
