World Science Day for Peace and Development has been celebrated every 10 November for 21 years. In 1999, during the World Conference on Science in Budapest, a commitment was made to use science for the benefit of international societies with the aim of promoting peace and ending poverty. Because the purpose of science must be none other than to ensure the good of all, with the sole objective of supporting life.
Although human curiosity has always led us to try to understand nature, Galileo (born in the 16th century) is considered the father of modern science. He used scientific methods to promote observation as the basis for all opinions and theories. In this regard, he stated that "the study of nature should not be guided by unsubstantiated opinions, but requires the observation and experimental verification of the proposed hypotheses."
The way Galileo worked and the protocol he used in his research paved the way for what we know today as the scientific method. It is a working methodology for obtaining new knowledge characterised by a set of practices that aim to either reinforce or discard a hypothesis. This is how science gradually makes progress, for the benefit of life, knowledge and health.
According to UNESCO, science "contributes to ensuring a longer and healthier life, monitors our health, provides medicines to cure our diseases, alleviates aches and pains, helps us obtain water for our basic needs – including our food –, provides energy and makes life more pleasant through the role it plays in sports, music, entertainment and the latest communication technology."
Bioiberica is a global company in the life sciences sector and, therefore, science is a fundamental part of our DNA.
This corporate vision and commitment is clearly reflected in our slogan Taking life science further. With this objective in mind, we identify and develop, with scientific rigour, molecules of high biological value that contribute to improving the health and well-being of people, animals and plants.
We always work in accordance with the criteria for the development and evaluation of biomolecules based on scientific evidence, using an approach aimed at optimising decision-making. Of course, we always prioritise the use of evidence from correctly formulated and properly conducted research, using the scientific method as taught by Galileo. The primary objective is that the activity of Bioiberica's R&D department, which is made up of a multidisciplinary team of scientists and technologists, is based on scientific data and not on assumptions or beliefs.
Javier Velasco, Quality & R&D Director at Bioiberica, assures that the pace at which science and technologies are advancing is ever increasing." For this reason, and because of our commitment to constant innovation, "at Bioiberica we continuously monitor technology to ensure that we are up to date with the latest trends in biomedical research," concludes Velasco.
Among the many emerging technologies applied by our company, Velasco highlights the fundamental role of those known as “omics,” which involve the study of a large set of molecules of the same type. This allows for an in-depth understanding of a complex product, a biological sample or an organism under study. These technologies open up a number of different interdisciplinary fields such as genomics (study of a complete set of genes), proteomics (study of all proteins in a sample) and microbiomics (study of a set of micro-organisms present in an ecosystem).
In the specific case of Bioiberica, we use proteomics to characterise the bioactive peptides in our animal health products with Palbio®, a high-quality protein source that helps maintain animal health; microbiomics to study how our biostimulant products such as TerraSorb® promote the development of a healthier microflora in crop soils; and glycomics to conduct detailed characterisation of our glycosaminoglycans, such as heparin and chondroitin sulphate.
As health experts, our main objective over the coming years is to continue offering our partners innovative and sustainable solutions with the highest guarantees of quality and safety, backed by the One Health strategy.
At Bioiberica, we have over 45 years of proven track record and experience in the development of new ingredients of high biological value to complement our current product range, not to mention our constant research and updating of all the products we already have in our portfolio, while always keeping an eye to the future.
