Bioiberica’s DAOgest authorised as Novel Food ingredient spurring innovation opportunities for European digestive health market

The approval paves the way for European formulators to develop new food supplement solutions that support histamine intolerance – an emerging gastrointestinal condition thought to affect 1-3% of the global population.
 

Making histamine intolerance history

As consumer awareness of histamine intolerance rises, DAO-based solutions are estimated to increase at a CAGR of 10.4% between 2020 and 2028. DAO is naturally present throughout the gastrointestinal tract, where it breaks down the histamine ingested from the food we eat. Symptoms of histamine intolerance occur when the body does not naturally produce enough DAO enzyme to break down ingested histamine, which can lead to excess histamine in the body and possible allergy-like symptoms. DAO supplementation can therefore help with the condition.
