As we kick off an exciting 2024’. we’re taking a moment to reflect on the incredible strides Bioiberica has taken in life sciences sector over the last year. It’s been a journey marked, not just by groundbreaking innovation, cutting-edge solutions and advancements in research, but also by a deep passion for enhancing the wellbeing of people, animals and plants, while protecting the world we live in. In this blog, we share a round-up of the key milestones that have defined our journey in 2023 – from scientific triumphs, sustainability initiatives and market-leading product launches, to hosting our first-ever expert-powered Collagen Symposium. Are you ready to delve into the top five landmark accomplishments that have shaped Bioiberica in 2023?
As specialists in delivering science-based solutions for pet health, this year we introduced not one, but two brand new, cutting-edge products to the market to cater to the needs of our four-legged friends. The first, ATOPIVET® Collar, was launched in Spain in April and is set to revolutionise atopic dermatitis management – a common skin disorder in dogs and cats. Offering pet owners a more convenient alternative to traditional topical and oral products, it works by releasing biologically derived skin health ingredients directly onto the pet’s skin. This makes it well-equipped to aid in the cyclical nature of atopic dermatitis and help reduce flare-ups.
Our second major innovation came with the international take-off of GIVET® - a new product that aims to address gastrointestinal problems in cats and dogs. Featuring a unique composition – including N-acetyl-glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate and hyaluronic acid (HA) – it is of high value to support digestive health in companion animals.
Both products will create a myriad of opportunities in the pet health sphere. But these launches aren’t the only standout achievements this year…
It’s been another exciting time of scientific excellence at the Bioiberica headquarters, characterised by a multitude of research publications in top-tier journals. Among the standout moments in 2023 are the scientific discoveries behind our branded ingredients for human health, including Dermial®, Mobilee® and DAOgest®. These scientific advancements help brands address growing demand for evidence-based supplements and functional foods. Here’s how…
Shaping the future of beauty-from-within
Dermial®, our science-backed HA matrix solution, is the first-of-its-kind for skin & beauty innovation. It’s a unique combination of three naturally-occurring components – HA, other glycosaminoglycans and collagen – which work in synergy to nourish the skin at only 60 mg/day. New peer-reviewed research has validated Dermial®'s anti-ageing, regenerative and antioxidant properties in skin cells; creating exciting opportunities for brands across the dietary supplement, functional food and cosmetic industries. The next step? Clinical trials to confirm its efficacy in humans.
Making moves in mobility
Similarly, Mobilee® is a matrix ingredient made up of HA, polysaccharides and collagen. It’s the first HA matrix ingredient for mobility innovation, where it has a role in joint and muscle health. Recent evidence has further highlighted the promising potential of the ingredient in muscle health, where it may play a supportive role by balancing muscle cell turnover. This suggests it could be used in supportive products targeted towards sarcopenia, a progressive musculoskeletal disorder characterised by loss of muscle strength, mass and function. Bioiberica is one of the first organisations to explore the role of HA-rich solutions on muscle health – stay tuned for more exciting developments in this field in 2024!
A new chapter in digestive health
Meanwhile, our diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme ingredient, DAOgest, was granted Novel Food Status by the European Commission in May, making it commercially available in Europe. The authorisation has opened up new possibilities for European formulators to create food supplement products that address histamine intolerance – a gastrointestinal condition that affects up to 3% of the global population, and rising.
It’s been a big year for sustainability. In July, we launched our Climate Strategy report, revealing the bold steps we’re taking to address the increasingly urgent climate emergency. The document highlights several initiatives; from reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% before 2030, to transitioning entirely to 100% renewable electricity by 2024 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. These aspirations echo the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN) too, notably SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation) and SDG 13 (climate action) – demonstrating our commitment to target setting and contributing to a better world, as one.
We also brought the power of partnership to our very first Collagen Symposium – a thought-provoking panel discussion that set out to debunk common myths and misconceptions surrounding the ingredient and debate the future of the collagen market. Bringing together leading experts from around the world, the event revealed some interesting insights and valuable lessons. We summarised the top five takeaways from the discussion in a report – download it here to uncover the unknown truths behind collagen and predictions for the future of the category.
Talking of shared expertise, our team has been busy engaging with key stakeholders across the life sciences landscape at prominent tradeshows this year – some noteworthy events include Vitafoods Europe, SupplySide West and the monumental CPHI. Hosted in our very own hometown, Barcelona, CPHI was an unforgettable conference marked by enriching conversations, valuable networking and inspiring shared experiences. Beyond the exhibition itself, we also hosted a memorable afterparty at the iconic La Pedrera, bringing together our dedicated partners in celebration of collaboration and success.
