Osteoarthritis may be caused by changes in communication between chondrocyte cells
According to a research Project by Spanish scientists presented in the OARSI 2013 Congress

These finding will play a key role to better understand the physiopathology of joint diseases affecting the proper functioning of cartilage and joints.

The findings of seven nationwide studies presented at the OARSI Congress might serve as the basis for new osteoarthritis treatment research.

It is estimated that 10% of the Spanish population suffer from osteoarthritis.

Close relatives of knee prosthetic surgery patients, at higher risk of developing severe osteoarthritis
According to a new study presented at the OA World Congress, OARSI 2013

• These results confirm the important role of genetics in the development and progression of osteoarthritis, and open the way to new biomarkers research.

• This paper analyzed clinical, familial and genetic history of 5,000 patients from Utah (a unique population, as they possess low genetic mixing) that underwent knee replacement between 1996 and 2007.

• It is a joint Project of the University of Utah, the US’ government National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Bioiberica Farma.

Osteoarthritis cases triple with the onset of menopause in women older than 45
• The decrease in estrogen levels, due to the onset of menopause, is one of the risk factors associated with osteoarthritis

• 80% of menopausal women suffer from osteoarhtritic joint pain-of those, 50% define their pain as ‘unbearable’ or ‘notable’.

• “Menopause specialists have the opportunity to treat osteoarthritis early in its onset, thus improving the quality of life for our patients”, says Dr. Elena Ruiz, head of the AEEM’s Pain and Osteoarthritis research group.

• That was the main theme of the “Osteoarticular healthcare in women” session, read during the 9th Diatros course in Women Healthcare, held in Barcelona.

The ′Osteochip Project′ involded more than 1,700 post-menopause women aged 45 and older from France, Switzerland and Italy.

This study is being developed by Bioiberica Farma, a leading Spanish biotechnology company with more than 30 years of experience in joint care under its belt.

• Dr. Santiago Palacios, gynecologist and member of the scientific team developing this project, will present the latest updates during the SAMEM congress in women’s health to be held tomorrow in Madrid.

Mutual benefit company Asepeyo recently awarded the first Asepeyo Awards to the best risk prevention management. These awards aim to grant recognition to companies working with Asepeyo that had outstanding results in the field of risk prevention during the past year (2012). Eighty-six papers were presented and they jury, composed of Asepeyo’s board of directors, decided to award prizes to eight of them. There were also 15 other finalists.
